Drink Coaster Care: Keep Froggy Coasters Looking Sharp

Froggy coasters can lose grip or fade when condensation and cleaning go wrong. Diagnose the symptom, fix the cause, and know when to stop.
Quick answer
Clean neoprene coasters with a damp cloth and mild soap, dry them immediately, and store them flat away from heat and sunlight. For the Froggy coaster, avoid soaking and harsh cleaners to protect the anti-slip rubber base and printed top.
Why condensation is the main threat to neoprene coasters
Neoprene is water-resistant but not waterproof. When a cold glass sits on a coaster, condensation can wick into the material and reach the anti-slip rubber base. Trapped moisture weakens the grip and can cause the layers to separate over time.
The Froggy coaster has a natural rubber base that grips the desktop. If water sits between that base and the desk, the coaster can slide or leave a ring. Drying the coaster after each use prevents most condensation damage.
Fading is usually about heat and sunlight, not washing
The printed top on the Froggy coaster is a soft, shiny material. Repeated exposure to direct sunlight or high heat can dull the colors. Washing with mild soap does not cause fading, but leaving the coaster on a sunny windowsill or near a radiator can.
Store coasters in a drawer or closed box when not in use. If you keep one on a desk, rotate it occasionally so one edge does not take all the light.
When cleaning stops helping
If the rubber base has lost its tackiness after cleaning and drying, or if the top surface feels sticky or cracked, the coaster is at the end of its useful life. No cleaning method can restore a degraded rubber base or re-bond a separated layer.
At that point, replace the coaster rather than trying stronger cleaners, which may damage the remaining material.
Diagnose your coaster problem
- Coaster slides on the desk: Wipe the rubber base with a damp cloth and let it air-dry completely. If it still slides, clean the desk surface to remove dust or oil. If sliding continues after cleaning both surfaces, the rubber base may be worn.
- White ring or stain on the printed top: Mix a drop of mild dish soap in a cup of water. Dampen a soft cloth, wipe gently, then dry immediately with a dry cloth. Do not scrub. If the ring remains after two gentle cleanings, stop; the stain may be permanent.
- Coaster feels damp or smells musty: Air-dry the coaster flat in a well-ventilated area away from direct heat. Do not use a hair dryer or radiator. If mustiness persists after drying, the neoprene has absorbed moisture and may need replacement.
- Colors look dull: Move the coaster out of direct sunlight and store it in a drawer when not in use. Clean with mild soap only. Fading cannot be reversed; prevent further fading by changing storage.
- Rubber base feels hard or cracked: This is material degradation, not dirt. Cleaning will not restore grip. Replace the coaster; do not try solvents or adhesives.
